Virginia Governor Northam signed a bill today which will raise the dollar amount from $200 to $500 in order to trigger felony larceny charges. Virginia has been tied with New Jersey for years for the lowest dollar amount ($200) which would trigger felony charges. The last increase was over 37 years ago, and there has been no adjustments for inflation. The threshold is still considered low by many but it’s a start. Now individuals accused of larceny of items less than $500 will be charged with misdemeanors rather than felony offenses.
